If you were to bump into Dion McCaffrie at the footy - and there’s a decent chance of that since he has been a SANFL Football Commissioner since 2004 and has been involved in football administration since the 1980’s - Dion would be pleased to think he didn’t immediately come across as a senior partner in one of South Australia’s leading law firms. Dion, you see, is more than a lawyer, he’s a good bloke! In his own words: “Being a lawyer is a good job to have if you can solve people’s problems.”
Dion McCaffrie was admitted to practice in 1975 and joined Andersons, originally in our Port Adelaide office, in 1976. There was no family connection with the legal profession. As he modestly puts it, he “... became a lawyer before I met one.” Perhaps the drive to solve problems directed him to a legal career. It was certainly a good move; Dion served from 1994 to 2007 as the firm’s Managing Partner.
His area of specialty is personal injury litigation and in particular, motor vehicle matters. Not only do these areas of the law have significant legislative complexities, but it’s normal and understandable for clients to be extremely concerned about both the likely timeframes for their compensation claim and the size and nature of their compensation.
Dion very much understands this and his approach is to be highly accessible to clients and to ensure that the process and all relevant factors are explained in clear and digestible terms.
Finding a satisfying and sustainable work/life balance is important to Dion and this is a key message he seeks to impart to new lawyers joining the firm. It is vital that lawyers - apart from being on top of their professional skills and knowledge base - are closely in touch with the values and concerns of the people they represent.
Since 2010 Dion has been a member of the Stadium Management Authority overseeing the redevelopment of Adelaide Oval - sometimes known as the best oval in the world!
