Ivan is a Partner in Harry Elias Partnership LLP's Family and Matrimonial Law Practice Group where he has extensive experience in all areas of matrimonial law such as contentious divorces, disputes over child custody, maintenance, division of matrimonial assets and family violence in the Family Justice Court and Court of Appeal. His practice includes acting for clients in contentious custody applications with cross-jurisdictional issues, mediation and advising on the preparation and drafting of pre-nuptial agreements and deeds of financial arrangement.
Ivan is the author of the chapters 'Practice and Procedure in relation to Children' and 'Other Applications relating to Children' in 'Law and Practice of Family Law in Singapore', a 2016 publication by Sweet & Maxwell.
Some of his notable representations include:
- Acting as lead counsel in landmark case in High Court in which client's appeal against an interim maintenance order was allowed as the Court held that neglect to pay reasonable maintenance must be established before interim maintenance may be ordered. Reported Judgment in TCT v TCU  SGHCF 3
- Acting as lead counsel in a High Court appeal which expanded the applicable principles of discovery in family matters pertaining to privately owned companies. Reported Judgement in ACW v ACX  SGHC 53
- Acting as lead counsel and successfully obtaining a urgent Mareva Injunction to restrain a plaintiff wife from dissipating over AUD700,000 in matrimonial funds withdrawn from a joint account and to secure the return of these monies to the joint account.
- Successfully representing client as lead counsel in urgent application for return of child situated overseas back to Singapore and resisting the defendant husband’s appeal which was dismissed.
Ivan is a qualified Associate Mediator with the Singapore Mediation Centre (SMC) and an accredited Family Mediator on the SMC Family Panel, a panel of family mediators accredited by the Family Justice Courts and SMC. Ivan has also been appointed by the Law Society of Singapore as an Associate Mediator on its Panel of Mediators for the Law Society Mediation Scheme.
He has appeared on multiple live local radio programs on 938 Live and has been interviewed by the local newspaper, The Straits Times in relation to matrimonial practice and the law. Ivan has been invited by various organisations to give talks on matrimonial issues and was recently invited by Maintenance Support Central to speak on the topic of Divorce Process and Procedure at the Singapore Council of Women’s’ Organisations (SCWO).
Ivan is an active volunteer at the Law Society Family Legal Clinic in the Family Justice Court and is also a Family Law Practice facilitator with the Singapore Institute of Legal Education (SILE) where he teaches Matrimonial and Family law to law graduates who are undergoing their mandatory training before they can be called to the Singapore Bar.
In his diversified practice, Ivan has also advised and acted for clients in other areas of civil law such as tenancy and contractual disputes. In addition, Ivan is experienced in general corporate advisory work where he reviewed, drafted and negotiated agreements for clients.
Ivan was called to the Singapore Bar in 2008.
