Rowan Silva, principal lawyer and co-founder of Wettenhall Silva, has over 25 years experience since being admitted to practice in 1987. His areas of extensive legal experience include criminal law, discrimination and sexual harassment law, and employment law.
Rowan is a member of the Far North Queensland Law Association, North Queensland Law Association and Queensland Law Society.
As a long-standing contributor to the Queensland legal community, Rowan has played a key role in the establishment of a number of community legal services in North Queensland. These include the Townsville Community Legal Service, Disability Legal Advocacy Service and Environmental Defenders Office of Northern Queensland.
Rowan’s vast legal experience reflects his passion and commitment to criminal justice and ‘a fair go’ for everyone. He has represented numerous claimants before the Anti-Discrimination Commission of Queensland, Australian Human Rights Commission, Queensland Civil and Administrative Tribunal and Federal Court of Australia in connection with discrimination and sexual harassment claims. These cases have covered almost all discrimination grounds, such as race, gender, age, pregnancy, parental status, political beliefs, disability and sexual harassment. In 2011 he was one of four national finalists for the Human Rights Law Award.
Prior to Wettenhall Silva, Rowan was the Regional Director of the joint North Queensland Office of the Australian Human Rights Commission and Queensland Anti-Discrimination Commission. He was also the retained principal solicitor for Townsville and District Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Legal Service and Tharpuntoo Aboriginal Legal Service. At Madden Silva & Co and in his own firm of Rowan Silva Solicitor, he set the foundation for his long career as a criminal advocate.
Outside of work, Rowan enjoys the great outdoors. A keen touch football player, Rowan is also actively involved in sea kayaking, rogaining and bush camping. He particularly enjoys family holidays, having travelled extensively with his wife and children.
