Editorial Commentary

The small pool of barristers actively practising family law in the ACT market sees the regular use of Sydney based counsel

Despite this a number of local barristers have developed strong reputations in the area and generally are the preferred choice when available.

Amongst silks only George Brzostowski SC has a significant experience and, as he begins to scale back his practice with a view to retirement Sydney silks are often the only choice.  In this regard not all Sydney silks regularly accept briefs on Canberra based matters and, as such the general  tendency is to use the  services of experienced Junior Counsel such as Julian Millar, Neill Macpherson, Rick Maurice and Suzanne Christie.

Amongst local Junior Counsel, Shane Gill is the clear standout.  While Gill also practices in criminal law, family law is his preferred area and he is seen as “excellent in parenting matters” and “very strong in the courtroom”.  Amanda Tonkin’s “forceful” style also drew praise.
