Ian was admitted to legal practice in 1987 having completed Bachelor Degrees in Law and Arts from the University of Adelaide.

Ian has always practised in the Family Law area but has also experience in a wide area of legal practice. He has practised in Adelaide and in the country. He established the firm of Ian Charman & Associates in the year 2000.

Ian is an accredited specialist in Family Law. This means that he has completed the examination requirements of the Law Society of South Australia to establish that he is an expert in this area.

He has also completed the training to be an Independent Children’s Lawyer in court proceedings under the Family Law Act. Ian is regularly appointed in Family Court and Federal Magistrates Court proceedings to represent the best interests of children.

Ian also regularly represents the interests of both mothers and fathers in such proceedings. He has also acted on behalf of grandparents and other interested family members in children’s disputes. Ian can expertly represent the interests of all potential parties to such disputes.

In relation to property disputes, Ian has acted in relation to married and de facto couples where the amount in dispute has ranged from modest amounts to asset pools worth millions of dollars.

In addition to the family law area, Ian has had wide ranging experience representing clients in legal disputes that enables him to assist people in most legal matters. Whether it is advice about a Will or a complex business transaction, Ian is able to assist.

Ian is a member of the Law Society of South Australia and of the Family Law Section of the Law Council of Australia. Ian was previously a member for many years of the Family Law Committee of the Law Society. Ian has regularly presented papers to other lawyers and legal graduates in the area of Family Law.

Outside of the law Ian has a wide ranging interest in sport, the arts and travel.
