Richard Schonell was admitted to the Bar in March 1993 having practised as a Solicitor for the previous 5 years as a specialist family lawyer. Since coming to the Bar he has continued to practice almost exclusively in the Family Court of Australia. Mr Schonell took silk in October 2010.
Mr Schonell has, for many years, been a member of the New South Wales Bar Association’s Family Law Committee. He is currently the Chair of the Family Law Committee of the NSW Bar Association. In the past he has been the NSW Bar Association’s delegate to the NSW Legal Aid Review Committee. He is also a regular contributor and speaker at conferences and seminars on Family Law.
Mr Schonell has, over the last 25 years, developed experience in all facets of the law as it applies to proceedings in the Family Court of Australia. A focus of his practice over many years has been appearing for high net worth parties as well as in complicated parenting disputes. Whilst based in Sydney he is regularly retained to appear in the Family Court in the other States.
Increasingly Mr Schonell is called upon to appear at or act as a Mediator and is an Accredited arbitrator in Family Law matters.
