Johannes Schmidt, Barrister

Johannes Schmidt, Barrister

Johannes (/johanəs/; yo-hunn-is) is a barrister and Nationally Accredited Mediator, practising exclusively in family law and related jurisdictions.  He accepts briefs for Court appearances, mediations (both as mediator and representing parties), arbitrations, advice and paperwork.

Johannes regularly appears in the Family Court and Federal Circuit Court, both led and unled, at final and interim hearings, and at mediations.

Since being called to the Bar, he has appeared in a diverse range of family law litigation, including:

  • complex property settlements;
  • spousal maintenance;
  • financial agreements; and
  • parenting disputes involving allegations of family violence, child abuse, drug abuse and alienation, children with special needs, relocation, and overseas-travel applications.

Johannes previously worked for over six years at Taussig Cherrie Fildes, a first-tier specialist family law firm, where he had carriage of complex property matters involving large asset pools, difficult parenting disputes, and family violence matters. He also gained extensive experience drafting, and advising on, child support agreements and financial agreements (including pre-nuptial, ante-nuptial, de facto cohabitation, and cross-jurisdictional agreements).

Johannes’s clients benefit from his excellent communication and problem-solving skills, and a highly numerate and commercial approach.

In 2014, Johannes graduated with a Master of Laws (Applied Law) degree majoring in family law, and was awarded the Sandra Paul Memorial Prize for the Best Graduating Student.  He also holds Bachelor degrees with honours from Monash University in both Law and Software Engineering.

Prior to coming to the law, Johannes ran a software engineering consultancy, and taught undergraduate computer science and software engineering at Monash University.

Johannes is a member of the Family Law Bar Association, the Family Law Section of the Law Council of Australia, the Family Law Section of the Law Institute of Victoria, and the Australian Institute of Family Law Arbitrators and Mediators.

He is fluent in German.
