Dr Aaron Lane is a barrister and practices in all areas of commercial, public law and white-collar crime.
Aaron has a strong interest in matters involving economic or financial evidence – and has internationally recognised expertise in blockchain technology and cryptocurrency. However, his practice extends well beyond these areas, and he welcomes briefs in a wide range of matters.
Aaron is available to appear, draft and settle pleadings, act in mediations, and provide advice across a broad spectrum of matters.
Since coming to the Bar, Aaron has appeared in civil proceedings including freezing orders, shareholder disputes, bankruptcy and insolvency matters, financial services cases, and misleading conduct claims. He has acted in criminal proceedings involving fraud, theft, and regulatory offences. He also has experience in disciplinary proceedings.
Prior to coming to the Bar, Aaron was Special Counsel at Duxton Hill specialising in fraud, misconduct and financial crime. In this role he gained significant experience with matters involving AML/CTF obligations, employee misconduct, directors’ duties, freedom of information, scams, proceeds of crime, and regulatory enforcement.
Aaron commenced his legal career as a lawyer at Maddocks. In this role he acted in administrative law proceedings (judicial and merits review) and summary crime prosecutions. He also advised clients on anti-corruption legislation, commercial agreements, corporate governance, property transactions, and state taxation.
In addition to his legal practice, Aaron holds part-time academic appointments as a Senior Lecturer in Law at RMIT University and Senior Fellow in the Competition & Innovation Lab at The George Washington University. Aaron has published widely and has co-authored three books and several peer reviewed articles in leading academic journals. He is a reporter for the Victorian Reports.
Aaron holds a Bachelor of Commerce and a Bachelor of Laws (Honours) from Deakin University, a Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice from the College of Law, a Graduate Diploma and Master of Arts from the University of Divinity, and a Doctor of Philosophy from RMIT University.
Aaron chairs the Digital Commerce Committee at the Law Council of Australia and is a member of the Blockchain Expert Group at Business at OECD.
